Dental Screening – Kindergarten and Grade 2

Dental screening will be provided by the Health Unit to students enrolled in JK, SK and Grade 2, and follow-up as required in accordance with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
A dental screening is a quick look in the mouth with a mirror and a flashlight by a Registered Dental Hygienist to assess general oral health. A summary of the screening findings will be sent home with each student. A school dental screening does not replace an exam with a dentist.
If you wish to have your child excluded from the dental screening, please notify the Health Unit at 1-800-660-5853, providing your child’s name, grade and school.
If cost of dental care would cause a financial hardship, the Healthy Smiles Ontario dental program may provide free dental care to eligible children and youth, 17 years and younger.
Information regarding dental conditions will also be sent to a provincial database as per the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, and entered into the system by class only; no identifying information will be entered. Personal information will only be collected if the Oral Health Program team finds a condition that requires attention and follow up.
